Namgya said,
“Sit here Tac. You are sitting on top of the world!”

An ever-present smile exuded Namgya’s warmth.

REMEMBERING NAMGYA

Through the course of my seven weeks in April and May 2019 spent in Nepal, I developed a special relationship with Namgya Sherpa who organized and led our team’s Mt. Everest expedition. It may sound awkward or extreme to learn that I developed a unique warmth and love for Namgya that I knew would be carried in my soul for the rest of my life. That’s how I felt in Nepal and how I feel today.

On Thursday evening December 15, 2022, I received the following text from a guide, Todd Passey:

“Hi Guys, I hope you are all doing well. I spoke with Namgya this morning. Namgya was more smiley than I have seen him in a while, we had a great conversation through Wangmu (Namgya’s wife). Then a few hours ago Wangmu told us that Namgya passed away. It’s a huge loss, but I believe he found peace before he left. He had been in a lot of pain, now he can rest.”

Namgya passed at age 52 and is survived by his wife, Wangmu, and two beautiful daughters Tashi age 14, and Yangkela age 8. Sherpas do not have life insurance and risk their family’s security with each venture into climbing’s hazards. Cancer has the same result as a fatal climbing accident.
